We are ever so honoured and humbled to have been s We are ever so honoured and humbled to have been selected to participate in this year’s Big Little Taiko Fest at @earthcelebration_sadoisland ! We are very excited to have this opportunity to share the stage with @ikkontaiko @musashi_seiran and of course @kodoheartbeat

Kodo has been a huge inspiration to us both in our taiko journeys over the years from early KasaMix trips, performance tours where different members have visited Montreal over the years, time spent in workshops or lessons with current and former Kodo members, to the pure enjoyment of hearing and seeing their sound whenever they perform. Kodo continually motivates us to keep working harder to grow as taiko players. Not to mention the beautifully inspiring concept of Earth Celebration where people from all over come together to create something as one, with nature, in coexistence and harmony. A purpose that remains ever so timely and urgent today.

Thank you ever so much to Kodo, EC and everyone involved in making this event happen. We are truly grateful for this opportunity to commune with everyone in this time and place and hope to bring some of that energy and inspiration back and continue to share it here.

Moku drum debut! 🥁✨ We had the pleasure of un Moku drum debut! 🥁✨
We had the pleasure of unveiling and debuting our new Moku drum at this year’s Festival Matsuri! 🎋It was a huge stage so perhaps the drum details were lost on the crowd, but we were thrilled to be able to share taiko with everyone using this drum.💕 As players we enjoyed the deep resonance and hope that the sound conveyed far and wide to the audience. 🏮

Much gratitude to @mokustudio.to for working with us to make this beautiful 2.2 shaku (!) drum. Their passion and dedication to what they do and the skillful craftsmanship of this drum are an art onto itself 😊 Having the drum sit at just the right height with a large skin to take in all the energy is very satisfying as a player!

Special shout out to members of @shima.no.taiko who helped us move gear on and off the stage! Extra arms are always greatly appreciated especially after a performance when everything feels just a little heavier than before the show 😉!

We have been waiting with bated breath to lay eyes We have been waiting with bated breath to lay eyes on our brand new Canadian-made Taiko and stands from @mokustudio.to and that day finally arrived! Riko and Ryan are incredibly skilled woodworkers who have made the most beautiful stands and taiko for us. Words alone cannot do justice to the detailed and precision work that these two have poured into their craft, it really needs to be admired in person. A huge thank you to @mokustudio.to for their incredible talent in building these gems and the extra personal touch of a hand delivery! We are remiss for not having taken a picture with them in front of the drum that they built, but here we are unloading the drum with them, standing in front of the beautiful stand that they built, a few shots trying to capture some of the beauty of the new drum and finally getting to practice on it! Our poor studio lighting definitely does not do justice to the beautiful artistry in this work.

The process in finding a solution to exactly what we wanted was very pleasant and professional. We exchanged many messages to both clarify and determine what would work best. From start to finish, we received regular updates such that when we finally received everything, the dimensions were exact to the millimeter! Their previous woodworking expertise results in some very impressive and beautiful wood-joinery that is not only functional, but visually pleasing!

Taiko community, please do check them out, they are hardworking and kind souls making beautiful drums, stands and bachi right here in Canada!

📷 thank you @audreybmorin for taking pictures 🙂 something we completely forgot to do amidst all the excitement 😉

Special thank you to Joao for hosting us and for your ever-generous hospitality! It was so much fun learning, teaching and performing with you all!

A huge heartfelt thank you to @rawtaiko for puttin A huge heartfelt thank you to @rawtaiko for putting together this beautiful production titled Lineage: a tender sound, with guest artists @sanjosetaiko . We are reminded of the pioneering role that San Jose Taiko has played in the North American and Canadian taiko landscape and the many seeds that flourished from their presence and contributions to North American taiko.

We enjoyed learning about RAW's history, activism and impact using taiko as their voice. We are very grateful to RAW for the invitation to share the stage with them and this wonderful cast.

Always an inspiration to see Kodo perform live on Always an inspiration to see Kodo perform live on stage! Thank you for the Warabe North American tour and for coming all the way to Canada.

We took the opportunity to watch both the Ottawa and Montreal shows, and would have gone to see the Toronto one as well if we could have (in fact we would have followed you on the whole tour if we could have 🤣). Seeing each individual's personality come out through the double-cast was a real treat. We also enjoyed seeing the show from two different seating perspectives giving us the chance to admire all the work that goes into the staging and balance of each performance.💕

Your friendship and generosity are always treasured and we look forward to continuing to support your growth and evolution.

Michinoku Geino Matsuri 2024 – Deepening the relat Michinoku Geino Matsuri 2024 - Deepening the relationships

2024 was a big year and we are very grateful for the many adventures and opportunities to work, collaborate and grow that arose for us in 2024.

Among the many that we have tried to document throughout the year, last but certainly not least was the Michinoku Geino Matsuri. Attending the festival in 2023 was like a dream come true, so a focal point of 2024 was continuing to cultivate and deepen the relationships with the artform and people around it. This year, we both were able to partake in the festival with the support of Yoshikazu san and Sado Onikenbai.

We delighted in the opportunity that attending the festival afforded us to meet with other Onikenbai dancers, have exchanges (to the best that our Japanese language skills allowed!), watch other groups dance, savor knowledge and tips from other dancers, and partake in joint practices which helped us both learn more. It was also fascinating to observe the creative artistry of everyone’s t-shirt designs!

Of the many precious learning opportunities, was a practice focused on the okado (the musicians) so that we could work on shinobue with the grandmaster. We really enjoyed seeing the passion and energy from the various Onikenbai groups, practicing hard and honing their skills, motivating us to work harder too. We were particularly impressed with our fellow overseas participants from @hibikiya_singapore as well as siblings from Paraguay!

A particularly memorable meeting this year was Ota san, an ex fellow member of Ondekoza with Yoshikazu san, who had been to this area to practice Onikenbai some 50 years prior. It was inspiring and enlightening to see him dance and sing as we got to spend time with him over the weekend. We hope to be as energetic and light on our feet at a similar age. Thank you Ota san for sharing your energy and stories and taking such good care of us over the weekend!

We hope to keep growing in these artforms, Onikenbai and Taiko, so that we can continue to share these passions with others.

One neat project from earlier this fall that we do One neat project from earlier this fall that we don’t want to forget to mention is Kokichi Kusano’s project – Sofu no Nikkiden. An inspiring project artistically articulating both a personal and important time in history. @kingsdontaiko very kindly allowed us to join in on their workshop time to learn a few pieces from this interesting project. We had sadly missed them while they were in Montreal due to a separate engagement and were happy to have had the opportunity to catch them in Kingston. A big thank you to Scott, Tony and Akiko for their passion in teaching us that day!

Earlier this fall, we had the pleasure of sharing Earlier this fall, we had the pleasure of sharing a little about taiko and the pieces we enjoy playing during the festival Biblio-Évasion Japon hosted by the pointe-claire public library. Another performance on the list of catch-up posts Another performance on the list of catch-up posts from this past fall was the Lise Watier Foundation Annual Ball. We were very honored to be invited to help celebrate the evening that raised funds to support female entrepreneurship through the - Let’s Start Up - professional development program with a mission of supporting women’s economic independence. Many thanks for inviting us and for the beautiful photos from the evening! Congratulations on a very successful fundraising evening! 🥂

Our trip to Japan earlier this summer was brief bu Our trip to Japan earlier this summer was brief but jam packed with many adventures, taiko- and other- flavored. We had the opportunity to observe a local community group in Fujieda (@tanumasakigaketaiko ) who very kindly invited us to participate in their practice. It was heartwarming to see how taiko brought multi-generations of families together with the community spending time to learn and grow together.

We also took some time to hone our Miyake skills while in Tokyo, joining in on practices led by Haru sensei @miyaketaiko . We really appreciate his ability to give each participant constructive feedback without disturbing the flow of practice! Thank you to @ishiwata.yuko, @kdraps &@olsefaeken for hanging out afterwards as well!

Last but not least, we spent some time with @wadaiko.taro and Rio covering a range of fundamentalsi. We really enjoyed building our technique with his approach and definitely were entertained by their comedic acts!

So much to digest still, but our hearts are very full of inspiration for the year ahead. 🥰
